Fourth of July in Orange County
We decided at the last minute to go to my family’s Fourth of July party in Orange County, California. The party was inland in the Mission Viejo area. In a normal year, it’s hot there, and most of us who travel in prefer to stay on the coast and drive into the party. This summer has been pretty cool, so far, on the west coast.

Getty Garden 2012
The gardens at the Getty Center are worth the trip alone. Southern California has a history of stunning public gardens brought to you by folks who made more money than maybe they ought (e.g., Huntington), but I like the Getty because it is thoroughly modern in spite of touches like this parterre in the middle of a water feature:

My trip to ISTE 2012 in San Diego involved a stay in Ocean Beach, a beach-side community in the city of San Diego that has it’s own distinct style.
